I was down a bookstore again today, reading some of their German history stuff.

The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is about 1,200 pages long, and the print size isn't even that big. I've read some it, but wtf @ the thought of reading the whole thing. Lots of little bits of information in there, very detailed stuff. I think that maybe the book lacks perspective, though, because it was released in the 1960s, only 15 or 20 years after the fall of the Third Reich, and historically speaking, I don't think that's long enough to really understand a huge thing...plus, the author wouldn't have been able to see as many of the consequences of the Nazi Era as someone writing such a non-fiction book in the last 10 years. The rise of the alt-right in Europe and North America, for example.

I've read it, it's quite good with very detailed information. It's been updated with new editions multiple times (like most historical texts) as new information is discovered.

Wow, I didn't realise that. But it probably wouldn't change the overall "tone" much, which is probably a problem.

Also, did you really read it all the way through? I mean, I've read fiction books that were roughly 1,200 pages, but never a non-fiction book. Come to think of it, i don't think I've ever read a non-fiction book all the way through, even a 300 page book or whatever. But I like reading articles online, especially on Wikipedia. Is it worth reading all the way through, even if you already know a lot about the Nazi regime?

Yeah, it's worth it. It basically starts with the treaty of versailles and moves forward from there. The first quarter or so of the book is just the setting of the stage and the actual rise to the chancellorship. It sheds a lot of light on the politics of the time, and gets very detailed into the backgrounds of the major players. It gives great insight into the resistance movement within in Germany, both civilian and military. It also delves deep into German history as a way to set the stage for how such a regime could have come to power.

Heinz Guderian's memoirs talked a decent amount about that towards the end when he was Head of the General Staff and had to deal with him for hours everyday. The worst one was Hitler's idea to have guys armed with Anti-Tank rockets (Panzerfausts) ride around on bicycles and Guderian told him "no that's dumb" and Hitler literally threw a temper tantrum.

Wouldn't they be kind of...heavy? Wouldn't it be hard to aim them, while riding a bicycle at the same time?

The problem was, Hitler thought he knew pretty much everything about the military, while really he'd only been a low-ranking guy when he fought in WW1. And, of course, by the end of WW2, he'd become so paranoid / unhinged that he thought all his generals were either incompetent, or "betraying" him. I guess he had to blame someone who wasn't himself.

He apparently had quite a few health problems.

There was the whole thing with his left hand shaking really, really badly. That might have been stress, although some people thinking it was Huntington's. He was on a lot of medication for various things, but this could've made things worse (think Michael Jackson).

Here's one of his outbursts, from that famous scene in Downfall, but with the original subtitles.

Besides, he's not a mother, or even a woman, in the workforce. I doubt a German girl would agree with him. Although I've been led to believe things aren't as bad as they were, back in the 2000s, now. Angela Merkel being Chancellor probably helped.

Do people have opinions on sexism against women in Germany? This was discussed a while ago in another topic, but there was quite a lot of agreement.

Apparently, women are strongly "encouraged" to leave the workforce for several years, when they have their first child, and are stigmatised if they don't. Also, something like 2% of people on boards of directors are women.

I live in Germany as well. Yeah I guess we don't have a lot of women in top manager positions, but I can't imagine it's different in many other countries. But we have some laws in place to basically force a couple of the bigger companies to have certain percentage of women in top positions.

As far as women being encouraged to leave the workforce after childbirth / pregnancy for several years is bullshit. If anything, Germans are encouraged to go back to work as quickly as possible lmao.

There are plenty of laws protecting parents, especially mothers. You can read up about them.

Perhaps things have changed over the years. I get the impression a lot of this sexism was in the 2000s and 90s. The stuff I read / saw was probably a little bit old (but not that long ago).

Of course, if I said this to Tar, he would deny there had ever been any sexism against women in the workplace. He would even go on about how many women held senior positions in the German part of the Holy Roman Empire.

We do still have problems with women holding executive positions in British society. There were some pathetically sexist comments from directors. One said that one woman on the board of directors is enough...another said that women can't understand complicated ideas. Pretty brazen sexism. I think the comments was anonymous, though.

AFD is a far-right party. I would not assume them to represent the views of the overall German population. Yes they have made gains over the CDU but one has to wonder if thats because of the backlash Merkel has gotten over welcoming in Syrian refugees rather than accepting the AFDs other views

Yeah I am German. I find basically all WW2 stuff insanely interesting. But it's all been done to death in books, the media, wherever. So there isn't much interesting stuff I can tell you, that you can't find elsewhere.

As far as nightclubs are concerned, it depends on what you like.
I live in Cologne, we have tons of great bars and clubs and are quite the international / student city.

the clubs tend to be small and packed. Even the fancy ones...I don't mind it, but plenty of girls I know prefer larger clubs that aren't as crowded. They usually open around 22h or 23h and are open until 5 or 6 in the morning. No real curfews or anything....which is nice. Except that also means you get a lot of drunk assholes.

but yeah, every city is different. So I can't say much about the clubs in Berlin, or Munich or Hamburg or wherever. I know Berlin is a bit more alternative and Munich is a fancy rich people city. So you will have more clubs catering to those types of people.

Interesting. Isn't Munich the capital city of the richest area in Germany? TBQH, places like London and Paris are forcing a lot of regular people (read: not rich people) out, especially London. I can't imagine many people between 18 and 35 live in either of those places anymore.

What are German girls like as girlfriends? Or do they prefer to just hook up? Do they still believe in marriage, or not?

The Trabant was one of the main cars they had in East Germany, and it was terrible. Slow, uncomfortable, and unreliable. It had no fuel guage, no headlights, no indicators, no back seat belts. Because it was made by the government, you had to placed on a waiting list, and it took an average of 10 - 13 years to get one.

Wtf. This was bad, even by East German standards. I mean, it was just a dreadful car. Perhaps it's best that a lot of people couldn't afford one.

I mean, look at how stagnant East Germany was compared to West Germany and its obvious why that was. Its kinda like the Korea problem actually, except the North has been separate for so long that reunification would be even harder (also due to how the government and society are set up) and a much worse hit economically
