I had pretty good luck for all the Alfonse/Anna missions by pairing them with Reinhardt/Lyn/Dancer and just shoving the A-pair in the way when the one they need to kill comes up.

H!Jakob is proving to be one of my go-to's for everything. With a dancer and a healer, he is invaluable for CC's and these special maps, and Myrrh picks up any slack he is not able to handle. He's definitely a huge boost for my armor team. I don't understand why they don't make all four "Defeat map with x team" quests available instead of doing a rotation for these BHB's

Protip you don't actually need to get the "kill level 40 Tana/Amelia" in the mission itself. You can kill one with Alfonse in the highest level training tower and it's not even that difficult to find them by rerolling and previewing the maps.

No need for the training tower. You can fight them on the paralogue 10 maps

Even easier would be to reroll arena assault with a solo Alfonse until you find a Amelia. People usually have unarmed units that you need to kill when these reruns show up.

this time i just used both of them at once in the lunatic map. it wasn't hard. in the past i've used arena assault and the static maps a lot of the time for more difficult things.

Pretty much any unit can be viable. He can be good support with his weapon, and he has the physical bulk to run Life and Death if you wish.

Got +Spd/-Def BCordelia for free off of a single colorless orb! Sometimes, it's just about being at the right place at the right time. I was thinking about making a quadding Klein, but Cordelia will do for now until I can get a +Spd Klein. My dream of making Quadkumi continues to shift. Poor guy

my last free 5* was Brave Lucina, from the TT banner that was a repeat of the CYL banner (in October, i think?). but hey i got a free Setsuna, that's like, a bit better than Cordelia once she's +10.

also got Tharja with the TT orbs. my streak of not-bad natures finally ends, as she's my first -atk focus unit since WTharja lol.

I have been pretty lucky with getting free summons with good natures. Most of them have been +Spd, and the only ones that got that nature that are debatable are Micaiah and Shiro

What are some tips for someone just starting out? Who should I spend my free 5 star on and how should I build my team around them?

i would recommend re-rolling until you get something satisfactory to you. whether that's one particular unit not a banner, one particular banner unit with the stats you want, a few particular banner units, or just the most 5*s you can.

Brave Lyn is definitely the best free pick you can make, but if you want you can try to get her with orbs first so you can pick one of the others to go with her. other than Brave Lyn, all the other units on the starter banner are good, as are all the new brides (Ninian/Sanaki/Tharja). Zelgius is good from the stance banner and Cordelia is good from the old bride banner.

best team with Brave Lyn is generally Reinhardt and two dancers. Bride Ninian is the only dancer as a focus unit now, so probably the simplest way to build a strong team would be to summon every blue from her banner, hoping for both her and Reinhardt. then save up 20/22k feathers for Reinhardt and get+promote the free Olivia to at least 3* (or just summon her, she's also common).

All of them are quite good. You can pick who you like most. Most people pick Brave Lyn - she is probably the strongest of the four. Lucina is good support, Brave Roy is very useful for spamming Galeforce, and Ike has the best A skill in the game.

If you've just started, it may be worth rerolling until you summon a unit or two you really like with your first batch of orbs. Bridal Bloom banner is the best banner to summon on right now, but if you wait until 5/30, we'll get a legendary banner with increased 5* focus rates that will probably be a more attractive option.

I would recommend you to ignore any colors in a summon session that don't match one of the 5* focus units because you have a lower chance of pulling a 5* on them.

Don't release characters. You have a lot of space to hold them, and many of them are useful for transferring their skills onto other units.

Bridal Bloom banner. Ninian should be the priority, but Tharja and Sanaki are also good

I would recommend the Stance banner or the Bridal Bloom banner. Zelgius is extremely powerful; easily the strongest unit on any banner.

Remember to roll on the colors for the units that you want. Tharja, Morgan, and Zelgius are from Red orbs. Ninian and Shiro are from Blue orbs, ect.

Don't worry too much about how many *5s you get. You'll collect them over time. The names we suggested aren't required - they're just suggestions based on the current banners, and banners change all the time. There's a lot of 5*s you can possibly get and you can turn 4*s you like into 5*s with 20k feathers, which seems like a lot but once you get rolling the game floods you with them. Basically any character in the game can perform well.

I think these are the best resources tbh. Though keep in mind some of those heroes also assume inheritance. As for any 5* heroes I'd recommend...(Bold are some of the very best)

Red sword: Ayra, (Fallen)Celica, Elinica Lene, Lucina, Mia, Ryoma, Sigbert, Sigurd, Soleil, Roy(Brave)Zeligus

Red tome: Honestly any 5* Red tome you get will be decent at worst. Well okay Leo is considered kind of mediocre.

There's no such thing as a bad dragon.

Blue lance: Azura, Bridal Charlotte Ephraim, Hardin, Hinoka, Lucina(Brave), Nephenee, Tana

Blue tome: Delthea, Ishtar, L'Arachel, Linde, Lute, Nininan(Bridal), Tailtiu

Also a good Reinhardt is amazing, though you'll need to upgrade him to 5* for him to shine. +Atk or bust.

Green Axe: Amelia, Dorcus, Hector, Minerva,

Green Tome: Deirdre, Olwen(RK), Rhajat, Sanaki(Bridal), Sonya

And again, there is no bad dragon... but Grima and Myrrh are some of the strongest units in the game. Especially Grima.

Colorless Bow: Bridal Cordelia, Faye, Hinoka(BSW), Innes, Lyn(Brave), Takumi

Colorless Dagger: To be honest, daggers are bad. If you use one, do so because you like the character. They do have some use, but otherwise know they're not a commonly used class.

Colorless healer: Pick a healer. 5*wise Elise, Genny, or Bridal Lyn are all nice. Otherwise role with whatever. Healers aren't super common, but they do have some cheese builds.

It assume unlimited access to rare skills. For example, a lot of armor units want Bold Fighter which is hard to get. Bold Fighter is only available from 2 units: Hardin and Christmas Lissa. Hardin is 5* only. Christmas Lissa is 5* only and only shows up on special banners since she is a seasonal unit. This means, you have very limited ability to give Bold Fighter to multiple units unless you spend a lot of money. The tier list assumes all armors have Bold Fighter available as an option for their placement in the tier list.

But keep in mind there are also a lot of good units below 5*s. Some of them don't need very much in the way of resources either.

Red Sword: Ares(Needs to be 5* to shine, but is pretty crazy with just his base kit)

Eirika is a nice buff bot, though she needs to be 5*s to do that. Something to keep in mind later, probably not the best help with a brand new account.

Hana is a hard hitting glass cannon(Soleil surpasses her but she's rarer)

Olivia can work at 3*, and competently fight at 4*(With proper resources, otherwise she can dance with nothing else)

Red Tome: Lilina hits like a damn nuke, though she requires quite a bit of resources to reach her full potential. Once you do though, she can casually one shot a large portion of the cast. That includes blues at times.

Male Morgan is probably alright as well. The other budge mages probably shouldn't be considered at this time.

Dragons are OP, though they usually want expensive resources. But yeah, Adult Tiki is 3-4* and very good.

Blue Lances: Donnel and Effie are solid lance units. The former comes with a Brace Lance in fact.

Lukas is a very potent physical wall, who really only needs Bonfire/Ignis and Quick Ripost 2 to murder things horribly. Granted I wouldn't put him as a day 1 unit.

Roderick comes with a Firesweep lance, a weapon that prevents counterattack(From you or the enemy)

Blue Tome: Reinhardt op. If he's +Atk, promote his ass.

Blue Breath: Nowi is one of the strongest in the game, though requires expensive fodder typically. Corrin is a niche debuffer that can work as well.

Green Axe: Cherche is a pretty strong flying axe unit, anti armor weapon would be nice as well(Though she also likes Brave Axe if you want to invest in her later down the road). Raven is a solid axe unit as well.

Green Tome: Nino Nino Nino Nino Nino! Super budget and one of the strongest units in the game. She's gone under some powercreep, but can still do amazingly with little investment into her. The only downside is.. you kind of need people buffing her for her to reach her full potential.

Green Breath: Fae is cool.

Bows: Klein is godlike for new players. Comes with a great kit right out of the box, no investment needed. Well unless he comes at 3*s. Then you'd need 2k feathers >_> But honestly, just use a 4* one if you want.

Daggers and Staffs: Use whoever you like.

I had just rerolled before those posts and after reading them I used my 50 orbs and got Myrrh and a 4* Soleil so I think I'll just rock what I got. I'll post a list of my starting units tomorrow and get some help with what direction to take my teams.

One minor thing I'd like to point out, if you want to know the Ivs of a unit, it's easier to check it out at level 1. Otherwise you'll have to either wait until they're level 20, or max level.

That being said, Ivs aren't that important unless you're planning to do arena. So it's not something to worry about just starting out the game. Some people are happy ignoring it altogether.

Oh hey, @IfGodCouldDie one more thing.

If you can, do a single Arena Assault match. You don't even have to win, you could surrender the moment you officially select an opponent. Just for participating, you get 10 sacred coins, and 10 refining stones. Both of these are really useful for the future.

For different matchups.

When you get a more filled barracks, it's pretty good to have a team for each classification (armor, cavalry, flier, infantry, maybe dragon).

Plus there are Blessings you can confer on your units, and there is a game mode that requires each member of a team to have the same Blessing.

You can also have separate teams for Arena Offense and Arena Defense.

Perhaps your best team doesn't have a bonus unit for this week's arena, then you can have a separate team that is solely your best team overall.

Then there's a Tempest Trials going on, with its own separate bonus units, so you can have a different team that is your best but also includes one of those bonus units.

Then maybe you want a team that you use to level up new units with dancers and healers.

There are tons of reasons to have multiple teams. Even with 10 slots, I sometimes feel like I need more.

Yes, they are essentially pokemon natures. There's no name for the natures here like in pokemon if that's what your're asking. A unit can either be neutral in all stats or have a bane in one stat along with a boon in another one. A bane means 3-4 points lower than neutral value in that stat at level 40, and vice-versa for the the boon. It is easy to check them by navigating to their character page on the wiki

You can only really tell someone's IVs by looking online at either their Level 1 or Level 40 stats, by the way. There's no in-game indicator.
