Speaking of Republicans potentially behaving badly:

http://amp.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/election/article222363510.html

The fast facts:

One of the Commissioners presented presented evidence of election fraud in the NC-9 house race to the Board of Elections. The evidence was reviewed in a closed session.

The Board unanimously voted to not certify the results of the election.

This apparently has something to do with wild irregularities regarding Bladen Countys handling of absentee votes.

The Board of Elections, whose future is in very serious doubt, is having a teleconference today to discuss and possibly vote again on the matter. Its pretty unclear what's going to happen from here.

It will die in the Senate because McConnell, but at least in 2020 they can say they tried to govern & use that to maintain the house & flip the senate.

If Mitch was smart he would allow for these bills to go to vote as it means the Mueller protection bill gets pushed back as the Senate spends time debating the bills Nancy sends up from the House which would at least counter the idea that he is 100% to a small degree as he can at least say he allowed for the Democrat's idea to get shut down by the increasingly conservative senate.

How Mitch reacts to the House Bills(don't let them come to a vote or not) will set the stage for 2020 down ticket.

Update on this story - it seems there was systematic tampering with the absentee ballots in Bladen County (and possibly also Robeson).

If there is not some way to figure out how many votes that was and which ones were fradulent to produce a more accurate count they may be forced to toss this election out entirely and re run it.

The same issue apparently happened in the Republican primary, so I would think that (some) republicans would want this looked into as well.

Also the board of elections that voted to unanimously not certify was 4 democrats, 1 independent, and 4 republicans.

Harris actually ousted a fairly popular republican incumbent by a thin margin in what was a pretty big surprise. There were weird absentee votes in that race, too.

http://www.wfae.org/post/harris-pittenger-race-unusual-bladen-county-absentee-mail-votes-poured-harris#stream/0

Harris won 96 percent of the 456 absentee-by-mail votes in Bladen, but won only 62 percent of all other votes in the county, according to state Board of Elections records.

Again, that is not impossible...but 96 percent are crazy numbers and a pattern is starting to establish now in Bladen.

Voter Fraud != Election Fraud

One's a nonissue.

One's Republican Standard Operating Procedure via egregiously awful gerrymandering, voter suppression, etc (Though I didn't think they strayed into the blatantly illegal side of it like this implies they might have)

Actually, we may have found the mythical ~voter fraud~ here this time. (Though with absentees, not the in-person voter fraud that VOTER ID!!!! would supposedly address. Which, you're right, is just not a thing.)

Silver posted that it definitely looks weird and that this situation isn't the usual voter fraud conspiracy: https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1068335913162481664

(Silver points out, though notes it isn't necessarilly evidence, that Bladen County is the only county in the district where Rs held their ground compared to 2016, whereas in the others you see big shifts towards Dems. Also notes that it's also unclear that even if something did happen it's uncertain it'd swing the race, though he still says this whole situation is weird enough to call for AP and others to uncall the race.)

Here's a WaPo piece outlying much of the facts as we know them so far: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/11/30/why-allegations-voter-fraud-north-carolina-are-being-treated-seriously

Some of this has made the topic already, so just adding a few summaries of my own (but the read and the graphs in the article are worth reading!)

In every other non-Bladen County, McCready (the Democrat) won the mail-in absentees by at least 16 points. In Bladen it was Harris (R) by 24. When you add in the early in-person voting data, Bladen stands out even more, because there are 2 counties where Harris won early in-person, but in the other - Union - despite winning early in-person by ~20, he lost the mail vote by 20. In Bladen, Harris wins the mail votes by even more than the early in-person. Bladen is also an outlier in terms of % of mail-in absentees.

The state board has had 5 affidavits submitted to them describing instances of fraud.

As Suprak noted, the NC Board of Elections (4D/4R/1 Unaffiliated) voted unanimously to not certify NC-09's results. As well as the fact that Harris's primary win looks shady in light of all this, although in that case even if something were proven I don't think there's a remedy for that at this point. As for NC-09, the Board of Elections could call for a new election.

This is another crucial point. All the weirdness is localized in one county, and it isn't clear that even *if* something untoward happened with the absentee ballots that it would actually matter in terms of who won.

Again, there is no proof of anything yet, but there is at least enough circumstantial evidence to make the non-partisan board of elections not certify the race. BUT even if they did find something, I cannot say for sure the swing would be anything more than 100-200 votes, which isn't enough to do anything in this race. Worth looking into though, absolutely.

So, DOJ is facing a request from an outside group to declassify the Carter Page FISA warrant. The group is arguing their basis on Trump's tweets.

In response, the DOJ is arguing Trump has no idea what he's talking about: https://twitter.com/bradheath/status/1068637546660470784

The DOJ also says that when Trump tweets about national security matters it doesn't mean his statements are accurate or that he has any personal knowledge they are correct.

More evidence that Ohio is lost and we should focus on different targets. Here are the popular vote margins from this year from all cumulative house races in "swing" states Trump won. These are pulled from Wikipedia "Unites States House of Representatives elections in ______, 2018"

Pennsylvania: D +9.91
Wisconsin: D +7.69
Michigan: D +7.68
Iowa: D +3.98
Arizona: D +1.06
North Carolina: R +2.04
Texas: R +3.51
Georgia: R +4.54
Montana: R +4.63
Florida: R +5.25
Ohio: R +5.27

Democrats only need to win up to Michigan (where they had a +7.68 advantage in house popular vote) to get presidency back. Iowa and Arizona look good for them too, and even North Carolina, Texas (!!!), and Georgia/Montana (!!!!) were all under 5.

But in this wave year, you had Florida and Ohio at the absolute bottom of all these states that could possibly flip. We can complain about Ohio being gerrymandered all we want, but we're losing by more than five points in the house popular vote, not even considering the governor race we lost by a similar margin. Florida you could make an argument for because the senate/governors races were both extremely close and Clinton did much better in Florida in 2016 than she did in Ohio. I would not give up on Florida yet because that is still within reach for the right candidate.

Ohio, however, looks to be going the way of Missouri without any trends that are encouraging to the democrats (other than Sherrod Brown who is looking more and more like a miracle Jon Tester sort of senator).

Dems should poor a ton of money into Michigan/Wisconsin/Pennsylvania (and ideally pick a candidate that does well in those states). Iowa and Arizona obviously are really high priority as well, and then maybe NC too. GA/TX/MT can all be lower tier targets with an eye on future growth. Florida is fine to focus on as well, but I really think there are like five or six other states that would flip before it.

Ohio can be abandoned for now imho.

I wasn't quite sold until I saw those house numbers. He was running against a very unpopular senator, but the Dems in the house went from -20 to -3.5 and a lot of that was probably due to the strength of Beto. I am a bit more open to him as a national candidate now. I am still hoping for Klobuchar because I think she sweeps Michigan/Wisconsin/Pennsylvania/Iowa without even breaking a sweat.

Even without that information, Florida still looks very competitive. Gillum was extraordinarily liberal and still almost won, and Scott was the strongest all of republican competitors and Nelson was literally a hair away. But it makes Florida even more appealing in 2020!

That's even more evidence for why Ohio should be summarily ignored in 2020.
