Is MMBN3 significantly better than 2? I beat 1 and didn't like it. I gave 2 a try since I heard it was much better but the first few hours felt like more of the same. I'm wondering if I should give this series another chance.

Verso taking over as the controlled character in part 2 and being an awful character
Agreed. I'm ultimately fine with Gustave dying because it's a good twist (although he's best boy). But after that there's a weird disconnect where Maelle is the main character in most regards but Verso's the character you control in the camp despite the player knowing very little about him for much of the game.

It does seem to be like everyone is all over the board on this, so...

What are the BAD Tales games
Out of the localized games:
  • Phantasia GBA
  • Destiny PS1 (it's alright for its time, but it's much better to use the fan translation for the PS2 remake)
  • Legendia (though it's one of those games that a minority of people really fall in love with)
  • World: Radiant Mythology
  • Symphonia: Dawn of the New World
  • Zestiria
  • Arise (this one is more debatable, but most long-time fans don't care for this one)
The Xillias can also be very hit or miss. Personally I have a soft spot for 1 but dislike 2, while a lot of other people are in the opposite boat.

Some?
X/Y is certainly the main turning point, but the 3DS Pokemon games were still generally good (outside of Ultra SuMo being lazy sidegrades released a mere year later). Whereas the Switch games are where things really went off the rails with stuff like Dexit, forced EXP Share, increased emphasis on catching Pokemon over battling (mainly in Let's Go and Arceus), and just generally feeling like lazy cash grabs.

It's the start of Pokemon's downfall in some ways, but it had some really good ideas too. It's easily the gen that did online the best, and it brought the main series to 3D for better or worse. In exchange, its main-game campaign was bleh due to the bad story and not knowing how to balance around the new EXP Share.

But it at least built a solid foundation. OR/AS showed how that foundation can lead to some amazing games. And then Sun and Moon squandered a lot of it and it's been a roller coaster of mediocrity to flat out bad since then.

Change FE1 -> Mystery of the Emblem
I'll switch this too. Mystery of the Emblem technically has a remake of the first game in it too, so it's "sort of" the first game and that part has been localized (in different games).

Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light
The Blazing Blade/Sword
Awakening
Heroes

First slot should go to one of the earlier entries. Shadow Dragon's the safe bet since not only is it the actual first, but it was localized (first the remake and later the original) while Mystery and Genealogy weren't.

Second slot should go to FE7 due to being the first localized FE. It was also very popular back in the day. Granted nowadays there's enough of a backlash against the game to put its slot a bit in jeopardy. But I still think it's important to have one of FE7-10 here and I'm not sold on any of the other 3 taking this slot.

3rd slot is pretty much a lock for Awakening. Like it or not (I don't), the whole "Awakening saved the franchise" narrative along with Smash Bros giving it Ocarina of Time levels of respect make it a safe inclusion.

4th slot is more in the air. Three Houses is probably the safe pick for being Awakening's bigger and better little sibling. But I don't think it had quite the same impact as Awakening did, so I'll be controversial and throw a nod to the never-ending gacha that's gotten IS a ton of money.

Multiple Fire Emblem games
Sadly I think they all have some sort of asterisk:
  • 2/Echoes - Alm and Celica share the spotlight with Alm being the main focus overall.
  • 7 - Eliwood is the main character even if he's the least popular of the lords.
  • 8 - Eirika and Ephraim share the spotlight. Eirika is a bit more important overall though, but not by enough to definitively be the main character.
  • 10 - Micaiah starts as the main character but Ike takes over pretty definitively.
  • Awakening/Fates/Three Houses/Engage - All feature customizable avatars where you choose their gender. Plus Awakening has Chrom competing for the main character slot.

My immediate thought is that Deck Nine is just incompetent and shouldn't be allowed to keep the franchise, but I haven't played or watched LiS2 which is apparently also really bad, so I guess technically it might not just be Deck Nine being trash.
IMO it's probably a bit of both. I've played the first 4 LiS along with Tell Me Why, which is a spiritual successor from Dontnod. IMO they're all mediocre to bad outside of the original which was amazing. Though I suppose LiS2 is my second favorite since it at least tried to do something interesting even if the actual execution was meh. Whereas Deck Nine's games are just boring, and I don't even want to get Double Exposure.

Visual Novels will sometimes not voice the main character to help you self-insert into them. I kinda doubt that's what they're going with here though.

Xillia 1 was my first platinum. I think it took a bit over 100 hours.

I have a soft spot for the game, though it's not all that great compared to the heavy hitters in the series such as Symphonia, Abyss, Destiny R, Graces, Hearts R, and Berseria. I think everything about Xillia 1 is at least average to above average though, which is nice.

I didn't care for Xillia 2 much. I don't like it when plots get excessively morbid, and other parts of the game also feel kinda low quality like with Symphonia 2. So I wouldn't mind the remaster being just Xillia 1; though granted I'm not excited to put down $40 for Xillia 1 especially if the Switch 1/2 version ends up sucking again.

Kratos never looked that decent again. He definitely suffered from GameFAQs trending away from edgy/cool characters. It's also harder for RPG side characters to retain popularity when compared to the main character, especially if you aren't from something like a Final Fantasy game that everyone here has played.
I feel like Tales fans also trended away from Kratos pretty heavily. He used to easily be a top 5 character in the series, whereas nowadays I'm not sure if he's even in the top 20 most popular characters.
